7 Signs of Hidden Water Damage Behind Walls and Floors

1. A musty smell that returns

A persistent musty odour can indicate damp materials in a wall cavity, under carpet or beneath flooring. Odour often becomes stronger when rooms are closed or humidity rises.

The smell itself does not identify the source, so moisture checks are needed before deciding on treatment.

2. Paint that bubbles, stains or changes texture

Moisture behind painted plasterboard can produce staining, bubbling or soft areas. A mark may appear some distance from the leak because water can travel along framing before it reaches the visible face.

3. Swollen skirting or cabinetry

MDF skirting, kickboards and cabinet panels can swell when they absorb water. Even a small change in shape can be a clue that moisture reached the base of a wall or kitchen cabinet.

4. Timber movement or floor changes

Cupping, crowning, lifted edges or unusual gaps can occur when timber or engineered boards take on moisture. Floating floors can also trap water beneath the finished surface.

5. A cold or damp-feeling patch

Wet areas can feel cooler because evaporation changes surface temperature. Thermal cameras can identify these temperature differences, but a moisture meter is still needed to confirm whether the material is wet.

6. Mould appearing away from obvious water

Mould growth behind furniture, inside cupboards or at the base of a wall can indicate persistent local humidity or a concealed leak. Cleaning the visible growth without finding the moisture source can allow it to return.

7. Unexpectedly high water use or recurring stains

Repeated staining or unexplained water use can point to a leak that has not been fully resolved. A plumber may need to diagnose and repair the source while a restoration specialist maps the moisture and dries affected materials.

If several of these signs are present, early investigation is usually cheaper and less disruptive than waiting for damage to become obvious.
